It is the twenty-first entry in the Super Mario series. ![]() Though the difficulty scaling does feel a bit dodgy, since it’s really more up to the course creator to define whether their course is easy, medium or hard.Super Mario Maker 2 is a 2D/ 2.5D platforming and level-editing game released worldwide for the Nintendo Switch on Jand is the sequel to the 2015 Wii U game Super Mario Maker. The endless challenge mode is a great new addition being able to rapid fire a bunch of levels on a limited pool of lives is a great way to pass time and even discover courses you may not have looked at if you were left to your own devices. I would have preferred being able to just keep hitting download and scrolling down the list, queuing up more and more levels to download. What isn’t awesome is the fact that downloading levels isn’t as seamless as it should be every time you want to download a level you’re taken to the course bot. It’s also quite easy to find awesome creators and follow them. There are a few issues here and there, but the new tags system is really helpful in finding the kind of levels you’re in the mood for. Of course, most of my time with Super Mario Maker 2 was spent downloading and playing through courses made by players all over the world, which means this is a great time to talk about the interface for searching courses. Sure, all the levels are expertly designed, and are mostly meant to give players some inspiration for levels they might want to make themselves, but I think it would be much cooler if the story mode made use of the course creator, with challenges around maybe using a limited number of tools to build a whole level. The only real down side to the whole thing is the lack of the use of the course creator in Super Mario Maker 2’s story mode. In fact, I’ve ever seen a spin on a survival horror level thanks to clever use of Mario Maker 2’s sound effects. There are a lot of tools to play with here, from simple level-creation stuff to even sound effects and music. If you haven’t already guessed by the game’s name, the course creator is Super Mario Maker 2’s main star. From the moment you start the game, you have the friendly pigeon Yamamura there to helpfully explain the various facets of the game’s creation tools, as well as general game design ideas and even Mario’s moves that you should account for when making a course. And a lot of it comes down to just how friendly Super Mario Maker 2 feels right from the outset. ![]() It manages to somehow strike the perfect balance between having a lot of options for basically any kind of 2D Mario level you can think of, while at the same time being incredibly accessible and intuitive, even for non-gamers. Super Mario Maker 2’s biggest contribution to gaming is its course creator. But what makes it special? The joy of creation In fact, Super Mario Maker 2 sits right up there with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey as one of the primary reasons to go out and buy a Nintendo Switch. Having spent a lot of time messing around with Super Mario Maker 2’s course creator and having downloaded a tonne of player-created levels, I can safely say, without a shadow of a doubt, that Super Mario Maker 2 is one of the best games of the year. Who doesn’t love Mario? I know I do! And when Nintendo releases a Mario game that’s, for all intents and purpose, infinite 2D Mario levels, you better know I’m going to stand up and start paying attention.
